Cerveja Barata is the cheap beer map: it shows where the cheapest beer near you is, in bars, supermarkets and depósitos (drinks shops), with the price per litre so cans, long necks, bottles and draught compare like for like.

What it is

A free price comparison site, at cervejabarata.com.br. It doesn't sell drinks or take orders, and it has nothing to do with cervejabarata.com.

Why it exists

Beer prices change from bar to bar, from day to day and even by the hour, and “where to drink cheap” lists age fast. Here every price has a source, a date and a check.

How it works

We gather prices from electronic receipts, from bars' own Instagram accounts and menus, and from people out drinking. Everything becomes a price per litre, sorted from cheapest to most expensive. Automatic rules and an artificial intelligence reviewer check every price before it goes live. The details are in our methodology.

Independence

Cerveja Barata is independent: no brewery, distributor or bar owns it. The order of prices is always by price per litre and is not for sale. We follow the CONAR rules for alcoholic drinks advertising in Brazil.

How the site pays its way

The site is free to use, and being on it costs bars nothing. To pay its way, Cerveja Barata sells sponsored spots to bars: a card and a pin on the map on the city page, and a card on each neighbourhood page. They always carry a “Sponsored” label and never change the order of prices, the prices shown or the verified bar badge. We use no ad networks and sell no personal data.

Open data and code

The prices and bars are open data, under the ODbL: download the files on the Open data page, or query them through the API and the MCP server, on the For developers page. The code that collects the prices is public, on GitHub.

We are starting with Salvador and Lauro de Freitas, in Bahia, Brazil. More cities follow as people ask for them.
